Our 2015/2016 Course
Our Year course follows a modular, three semester format which
allows the actor to ‘sign up’ for one, two or all three modules at the outset - or to pick up subsequent modules later if their circumstances change.
All classes take place at our new teaching venue, the Diorama Arts. For more details, click here.
Here’s how it works …
The course is divided into three self-contained modules of eight weeks each. There are entry points in October 2015 and January 2016.
Module 1 – Living Truthfully
Module 2 – The Given Set of Circumstances
Module 3 – A State of Aliveness
Living Truthfully covers our basic, Meisner-rooted Technique, giving you a deep and experiential grounding in its analysis and exercises, focusing on those which bring you into 'the moment.'
The Given Set of Circumstances takes the Technique forward into work with 'the givens' of performance, including investing in the realities of doing at the heart of any actor's work.
A State of Aliveness takes your work into text, from the first Reading and text analysis, through to rehearsal techniques, culminating in a performance of scenes for an invited audience.
Completion of three modules qualifies you for admission to our Second Year rehearsal and performance course.
Where do you begin?
The majority of students will begin with Module 1, Living Truthfully. Even if you’ve done an introductory course with us, or elsewhere, it can only give you a flavour of what the Technique can deliver.
Students who have already have a significant body of experience with The Impulse Company may begin with either Module 2 – The Given Set of Circumstances – or Module 3 – A State of Aliveness, using it as a showcase opportunity, with Scott’s agreement.
How much does it cost?
Our total, VAT-inclusive price for the three module course is £2250.
We offer a discount – from the £2250 full cost of the year to £1950 – to students who pay ‘upfront’. We’re also continuing to offer our interest-free deferred payment option, which allows you to spread your payments for each module over four months.
Class sizes vary from year to year but are unlikely to consist of more than 20 people. Between eight and 15 has been the average over the twelve years we’ve been running the course.
Because the Technique is experiential, classes are practical and are, we believe, unique in the amount of personal tuition and feedback you’ll receive.
The course is designed and taught by Impulse Artistic Director Scott Williams with occasional substitution, principally by Trine Garrett, Dannie Carr or Lindsay Mohun Dade.
How do you apply?
We conduct rolling interviews, so just get in touch with Impulse’s Administrator, Lindsay Mohun Dade – Lindsay@impulsecompany.co.uk or 07525 264173 – and she’ll fix you up with an informal interview with Scott. She’ll also email you a questionnaire which you should complete and take with you to your interview.
The course is very popular and it's our practice to match our rolling interview programme with rolling offers - it's unusual for us to keep a candidate waiting for a decision more than two weeks after interview. October may feel like a long way away and January next year even further but if you're interested, do get full details from Lindsay and set up that interview as soon as you can.
